Just before 9pm last night Fire & Rescue NSW crews responded to reports of a House Fire on Derna Road at Holsworthy in Sydney’s South West. Crews arrived to find the top level of the house totally involved in fire, with flames coming from all sides of the house and through the roof.

Firefighters initially attempted to enter through the front of the house, before the deteriorating conditions forced them into an external attack as the inside of the building began to collapse. Firefighters made entry into adjoining properties and deployed numerous crews in breathing apparatus to stop the fire spreading into surrounding homes.

Crews were hampered by water supply issues, with difficulty finding hydrants and poor water pressure. As firefighters continued to work with hose lines to surround the fire on all sides, Aerial Pumper 47 was used to extinguish the fire from above and after over an hour the fire was able to be brought under control.

The fire completely destroyed the second level of the house but despite the conditions on arrival, firefighters managed to save both adjoining homes and surrounding properties.
