What’s your unfair advantage? In this video, we are going to discuss one of the best books that I have read when trying to figure out my career and using it’s lessons led me to my first £1000 from YouTube. As part of this, I am going to show you through the ‘MILES’ framework, what my unfair advantage.

The main reason why I really got on with this book, was the opening gambit that one, Life is unfair, and two, don’t let that be an excuse. It uses different case studies of where people could easily have given up.

So who should read this book? I would argue everyone who is trying to suss out their career, because it makes your career easier!

It is based around the MILES framework which consists of five distinct areas, Money, Intelligence and Insight, Location and Luck, Education and Expertise and finally Status.

It will really help when dealing with three distinct groups. That is the ‘Intrapreneur’, the ‘Entrepreneur’ and then finally ‘training and coaching’ which I will dive into.

So let me clarify the ‘Intrapreneur’, this is someone who is not set on establishing their own business, but rather looking at their workspace and so how can they progress this and improve this. Not only have impact to the business that they work with, but quite often will bring a huge positive impact to their own wellbeing.

So my own intrapreneur has been within my workplace of using my unfair advantage of knowing how to create and edit videos and create them for my workspace, my ‘expertise’. I combine this with using my ‘status’ as a local doctor to give the videos credibility.

This wasn’t asked of me, but has really helped my career at my medical practice AND with working with Hull York Medical School. It also adds something extra that has really helped motivate me and keep me happy about where I work.

With regards to Entrepreneur there are LOADS of talks and adverts about side hustles, establishing your own business and being independent. The big stumbling block though is WHERE to start??

The entrepreneur has led me to create this channel. The ‘intelligent and insight’ can be as simple as ‘reading a book that someone else hasn’t’ or ‘being on a course or conference’ that you haven’t. Hence why I do book reviews, I did a review on my RedWhale interview and also about the work I have done with Medics Money.

By demonstrating that I was confident in teaching, this led MORPH to reaching out and reflecting again ‘education and expertise’ and then leaning on status as a doctor to provide clarity with this. The work I have done with them led me to my first £1000 via YouTube and you can see more of this in the video here ‘point’

So finally training and coaching

I am a GP Trainer and so I will often say to my trainees that I am their unfair advantage. As I will look after them, then any contacts that I have, I will share with them and hopefully support. Just this week, my new trainee was interested in sports medicine and so I put him in touch with someone that I know to help him out.

The main way though is helping them when they need to make a project, such as a Quality Improvement. So for one of my trainees, she has an autistic child and struggled, despite being very intelligent to get the correct funding that she was entitled too. She had managed through using her contacts to get the right forms completed and got this organised. I suggested then that she use this information to put into a patient information leaflet as it was clear that had a unique ‘insite’ into the problem and also appropriate ‘education’ to communicate this to others.

The benefit for her was that she was able to complete her quality improvement project with minimal effort and the output from this was superb and was communicated widely into the local area.
