The Battle of Gingindlovu happened on the 2nd of April 1879 when Chelmsford's relief column of 5600 men was attacked by 11000 Zulus. The British and South Africans formed a wagon square, known as a laager, and were supported by two 9-pounder guns, two Gatling guns and four 24-pound rocket battery. The native auxiliaries, artillery and cavalry were placed inside the square whilst the main line infantry and Gatling guns fired from the wagons. 2 British were killed, while over a 1000 Zulu's perished. After the success of the battle, Colonel Charles Knight Pearson and the garrison at Fort Eshowe were relieved.
