Chechnya - Update on situation in Chechnya

A ceasefire that went into effect at 0800g on Wednesday (14/8) in war-torn Grozny has been respected in some regions of the city but ignored in others. Inside Grozny, Chechen fighters reinforced their positions and roamed parts of the city with impunity. Russian soldiers, too, dug into their positions. The ceasefire, however shaky, was good news for thousands of residents of Grozny who were finally able to flee the city. Many of those who left the city had been trapped in their homes for the last nine days.
