18 Holes at St. Pierre Old Course. Every shot from my round at this historic championship course.

Every shot from my round on the Old Course at Marriott St. Pierre Country Club, near Chepstow, Monmouthshire, on 6th June 2024. (Available in 4k!)

This course has been on my wish list for a very long time! When I was much younger, the Old Course at St Pierre would often appear on TV, hosting professional tournaments or various Pro-Am and celebrity events and probably growing up in Wales, appeared on Welsh TV a little extra as well.

I was always in awe of the course, especially its closing par 3 hole which I though was very daunting, with it being well over 200 yards with a lake also involved. So it was certainly with a little trepidation that I teed off here with childhood memories swimming in my head.

Once on the course, it becomes evident that the mature trees are a primary feature here at St Pierre and offer many challenges on how to play the holes. Certain holes require good placement of your tee shot in order to allow access to the greens, to avoid these huge natural hazards. Another defence of the course is its length with a yellow tee yardage of 6300 yards and over 7000 yards off the black tees!

It was really refreshing to play on a course with consistently firm fairways that allowed for bounce and roll off the tee, and then to hit into greens that were also quite firm but allowed well hit shots to bite. The greens were all a good pace throughout my round and even though they had been recently treated, it didn't detract at all from the experience.

I played really well today except for a single hole and a few 3 putts and posted a score that I am very proud of. I could very easily see myself taking an additional 10 or more shots on a course like this on a different day. As for my endeavours on the feared 18th, well you'll just have to watch and see!

It's a really super course in a great setting and really easy to get to being very close to the motorway network and just over the old Severn bridge. It's also an easy walk round despite its length. All in all a super and challenging course in wonderful condition 👍
