Frenchman Coulee Backcountry, Washington State

Frenchman Coulee is located in central Washington, near the small town of Vantage. It lies within the Columbia River Basalt Group region, formed by successive massive lava flows. These flows originated from fissures deep within the Earth's crust around 6 to 16 million years ago during the Miocene epoch. Today, Frenchman Coulee is widely known as a rock climber's mecca. Its towering, polygonal-shaped pillars give the landscape a distinctive and almost otherworldly appearance. In addition to the popular climbing areas, there is also a vast backcountry where nature rules. Frenchman Coulee's basalt formations are a testament to the powerful geological processes that have shaped the Pacific Northwest region over millions of years. The columnar basalt, sculpted cliffs, and deeply eroded canyons filled with huge deposits of volcanic ash and sand dunes make it a captivating destination for rock climbers, nature lovers, and adventurers alike.
