The Maldives, a small island nation in the Indian Ocean and a close neighbor of India, is facing a serious threat from rising sea levels. This low-lying country is made up of about 1,200 coral islands, and most of its land sits less than 1.5 meters above sea level. Because of this, it is extremely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, especially ocean level rise caused by the melting of polar ice caps and thermal expansion of seawater as the planet warms.

Scientists have warned that if global warming continues unchecked, large portions of the Maldives could be underwater by the end of this century. Even small rises in sea level can lead to more frequent coastal flooding, stronger storm surges, and the erosion of beaches and infrastructure. Saltwater can also seep into freshwater supplies, making it difficult for communities to access clean drinking water or grow crops.

This looming threat is not just an environmental issue but also a human one. The Maldives has a population of over half a million people, and their homes, livelihoods, and cultural heritage are at risk. The government has been trying to respond by building sea walls around some islands, raising critical infrastructure, and even exploring the idea of buying land in other countries as a possible refuge if sea levels make parts of the country uninhabitable.

The situation in the Maldives serves as a warning for other coastal and island nations around the world. It shows how urgent it is to take global action on climate change—cutting greenhouse gas emissions, shifting to renewable energy, and protecting natural ecosystems—so that vulnerable places like the Maldives have a chance to survive the rising tides.
