Regular weekend steam excursions on Niles Canyon Railway, Alameda County, California, featuring Clover Valley Lumber Co. No. 4, a 2-6-6-2T articulated compound steam locomotive (1924), one of only two operating in North America. My friend Alan S. at the throttle. The Niles Canyon Railway (NCR) is operated by the Pacific Locomotive Association (PLA) between Sunol and Niles, California, through steep and rugged Niles Canyon on most weekends throughout the year, with occasional special railfan events. Along with the Golden Gate Railroad Museum's beautiful P-8 Pacific No. 2472 (1923), four steam engines operate on this line along with several vintage diesels and occasional guest engines.

Opens with brief footage of Quincy RR No. 2, a 2-6-2T..

Quick note - not all train actions whiz by at 75 miles per hour. Many are stately and require some patience. 300 tons of inertia does not lunge like a cheetah! Just so you know :-)
