In Bengaluru, many small shopkeepers and street vendors have started removing UPI QR codes from their shops. They are now putting up signs that say “No UPI, only cash.” This sudden change is causing confusion among regular customers who are used to paying digitally.

The reason for this move is that the tax department sent notices to many small traders. The department used UPI data to check how much money these shopkeepers were receiving. If a shopkeeper received more than ₹40 lakh in a year through UPI, they were asked to register for GST. Some were shocked because even small vendors like tea stall owners or vegetable sellers got these notices.

The shopkeepers say it’s unfair. Many of them mix personal and business payments in the same UPI account. So the total amount shown may not reflect their real business earnings. Some notices even demanded huge sums in taxes. This has made many small traders scared of using UPI at all.

To protest, traders planned strikes and even a citywide bandh. They want the government to listen to their concerns. Meanwhile, the government is trying to explain that not everyone has to pay tax and that they are just gathering information.

Still, the trust is shaken. Shopkeepers worry that using UPI may bring more trouble than benefit.
