Hey scientists! It’s time to spin up some fun because "science is wherever you are"!
In today’s experiment, we’re building a classic optical illusion toy called a "thaumatrope" — and you can make it with just a few simple supplies you already have at home.

A thaumatrope is an early animation device that tricks your eyes and brain into seeing two images as one. Pretty cool, right? Here’s what you’ll need: a piece of sturdy paper or thin cardboard, some string or rubber bands, scissors, tape, and markers. That’s it!

First, cut out a circle about the size of a drink coaster. On one side, draw a picture — maybe a bird. On the other side, draw a cage. Tape a piece of string or rubber band to each side of the circle. Now comes the fun part! Twist the strings between your fingers and let your thaumatrope spin. Whoa! The bird looks like it’s inside the cage!

So, how does it work? It’s all thanks to something called "persistence of vision". Your brain holds on to an image for a fraction of a second after you see it. When the disc spins quickly, those two separate images overlap in your mind, creating one combined picture. It’s the same principle that makes cartoons, movies, and even video games look like smooth motion.

Try experimenting with different designs — a fish in a bowl, a rocket blasting off, or even your own funny creations. Every spin is a chance to explore the amazing connection between art and science.

So grab your supplies, build your thaumatrope, and start spinning the science around you. Remember, scientists — "science is wherever you are!"
