Struggling with pull-ups? I was too—until I turned 51 and built real back strength. Here’s the pull-up progression that helped me go from 2 reps to 10+.

When I was in my 30s, I didn’t have a solid five-year stretch where I was consistently working out in the gym. I really struggled, especially with pull-ups. My strength just wasn’t there.

However, when I returned to training at 51, I made it a priority to develop my back strength. In my opinion, pull-ups are the best exercise for developing a strong, well-built back.

At first, I could barely do one or two. So I focused on a handful of exercises to help me get stronger:

• Resistance band row
• Resistance band lat pulldown
• Dumbbell row
• Gorilla row
• Inverted row
• Renegade row
• Static hold
• Resistance band-assisted pull-up

Pick two or three of these exercises and do them for three rounds. That’s what I did, and over time it worked. I went from struggling to get two pull-ups to hitting five… and now I can do 10 pull-ups for 3 to 5 rounds.

I hope this helps you build the strength to crush pull-ups too. It’s hands down one of the best things you can do for your back. Let’s go!
