We have a breeding pair of Common Kingfisher that breeds on the bank of Fyris Creek, at least when they survive the winter. It seems they did this year... (I don't know it there is some individuals migrating, as well.) Word spread in the birding community in Uppsala, so there were quite a few peeps gathered on the opposite side of the creek. The female hid in a tangle, maybe 10 meters from the nesting hole when we arrived. It was a warm and sunny Friday afternoon, and the trail goes close along the edge of the creek. Many joggers and cyklists and weekend strollers trafick this trail. So, we got many curious questions about why on earth we were hanging out there, armed with binoculars, cameras and spotting scopes.
After a few minutes the female flew to an open perch, halfway to her burrow, and I got some nice photos despite the distance and harsh light. After some waffling, she decided the coast was clear and flew in. We didn't see the male while we were there, as we didn't stay that long.
I have no idea if the breeding was successful or not, I only did this one visit and haven't checked if someone knows if we got a new generation of Kingfishers as a result.
