Talcott Parsons’ Theory of Social Change | Key Themes in Sociology | Episode 9 | ForumIAS

Parsons’ intelligent formulation of social change is within the broader context of his theory of social system. He presents a dynamic understanding of order by referring to moving equilibrium. He contends that the equilibrium in the system is self-maintained which implies that everytime the equilibrium of the system tends to get disturbed, the system tries to restore it.
For Parsons, equilibrium is not a fixed state. It is a dynamic and continuous process characterized by continuous adjustment and modification. Therefore, every equilibrium stage presents a new equilibrium. With his theory of moving equilibrium he brings his theory of change under his grand systemic theory of order.
He also refers to change through four stages wherein we go from structural differentiation to social integration. Moreover, his theory of pattern variables (move from Set A to Set B) can also be referred to while discussing his insights on social change.
