The Aircraft Approach Category depends on the Vat (Indicated speed over the Threshold).

The Decision Altitude changes with the Aircraft Approach Category, so it is important to know which is the Category of your aircraft.

The Aircraft Approach Categories are the followings:
Category A: Vat below 91kt.
Category B: Vat between 91kt and 121kt
Category C: Vat between 122kt and 141kt
Category D: Vat between 142kt and 166kt
Category E: Var between 167kt and 211kt

To calculate the Vat you have to multiply the Vso (stall speed in landing configuration at maximum certified landing weight) by 1.3.

The havier the Aircraft the higher will be the Vat.

Looking at the minimum section of the Jeppesen Approach Chart you will notice that there is a Decision Altitude for each aircraft category.

To give you an approximated idea about the Airplane classes, the Small Single Engine Pistons Aircraft are Class A, the small Multi-Engine Plane is class B, the medium airliners such as Boing 737 are Approach Category C, and so on.

Depending on the Aircraft Approach Category we have to comply with some maximum speed restrictions throughout the approach.

These restrictions are in place for the following Approach Phases: Speed for the initial Approach, Speed for final Approach, Speed for Visual Maneuvering,
Speeds for Missed Approach.
