Bloody Mary's FIRST Victim - The HORRIFIC Burning Of John Rogers

Описание к видео Bloody Mary's FIRST Victim - The HORRIFIC Burning Of John Rogers

Bloody Mary gets her nickname from her brutal treatment of Protestants during her reign. Following Henry VIII's changes to religion in which Catholicism was outlawed and Edward VI carried on this work, Mary I would rise to the throne and had a huge problem. Her own religion was Catholicism and she worked quickly to restore it as England's main religion. However her reign is more characterised by brutality and especially the executions of high ranking Tudor members of the Protestant Church.

Over the course of her short 5 year reign, Mary I would burn or execute over 280 Protestants, accused of heresy and not supporting the Queen or her Catholic faith. Many of these people previously had been rather popular during the reign of Edward, but now faced great suffering. One of these people was John Rogers who would go down in History as the first victim of Bloody Mary.

John Rogers famously translated the Bible into English using William Tyndale's notes along with Miles Coverdale and this would be adopted by Henry VIII as the Matthew Bible. His work brought the word of the Bible to the English public as now they could read about Jesus and the Old and New Testament. His Bible was even praised by high ranking members of the English Church. However when Edward died and Mary I came onto the throne, life would get extremely dangerous for Rogers. He was imprisoned and was offered the chance to live should he recant his Bible and convert to Catholicism, however he would refuse. For this he was horrifically burned at the stake. So join us today as we look at 'Bloody Mary's FIRST Victim, the horrific burning of John Rogers.'
