How will Texas meet its health care workforce needs?

The Texas Tribune hosted a conversation about Texas’ health care workforce in Waco at Texas State Technical College’s Col. James T. Connally Aerospace Center on Tuesday, April 23.

Texas communities are experiencing a medical workforce shortage that can result in long trips and delayed checkups for many Texans. State officials and colleges across the state are working to address the shortages. On the state level, legislators in 2023 approved $4 billion for state behavioral health services over the next two years and passed a law that supports nursing students and faculty. And community colleges and four-year universities are developing new health care programs.

Over lunch, the Tribune talked with experts about the impact of these and other actions, how Texas colleges are addressing these challenges, and what actions state leaders and lawmakers can take to address our health care workforce needs.

Speakers include:
Maria Darby, chief operating officer, Dwyer Workforce Development
Jackson Griggs, M.D., CEO, Waco Family Medicine
Darrel Spinks, executive director of the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council
Andy Weaver, provost of Texas State Technical College's West Texas campuses

The conversation was moderated by Terri Langford, the Tribune's health and human services editor.
