This is a very affordable and easy way to begin brewing delicious Pour over coffees at home.
Taking a look what you get in the box ;
There’s the V60 plastic Cone Dripper, a 600ml Hario Coffee Server, Forty paper filters and a 12g measuring spoon.
The V60 is great for making 1 to 4 cups of filter Coffee, enough for yourself or share with a friend.
To start brewing.
First grab a paper filter and Fold it along the seam, open that up and place that in the V60 cone
Rinsing some water through this first helps eliminate any possible papery taste coming from the filter and it heats up everything too.
Discard this water,
And then we’re going to weight out our beans and grind them to a medium-fine grind.
Making a pourover coffee relies mostly on using a brew ratio of how much coffee to water you’re brewing with. .A standard brew ratio for the V60 is 1:16.5, or a better way to work this out is to know how much coffee you want to make.
for me I want to brew 330ml of coffee …so I divide that by 16.5, and boom - I need 20g of ground coffee.
Now freshly ground is always best - and a good hand grinder goes a long way and make a great cup of coffee.
After Adding your coffee and into the cone give the brewer a little shake to level the grounds
Then tare your scales.
Next we’re going to Bloom our coffee.
This is a small amount of water, about twice as much water to coffee, to prepare your grinds for an even extraction.
Waiting for around 30 secs after adding the bloom water assists in this process of allowing the grounds to fully soak up the water.
Once that time has passed, begin slowly pouring the water into the bed of coffee in circles, starting from the inside out, and back in again.
Pouring slowly ensures you don’t splash any coffee up the sides of the cone, and avoids filling the V60 up too fast.
And having a pouring device like this Gooseneck kettle helps control the flow of water into the V60.
Aiming for my 330ml to be finished around the 3min mark which means I’ve brewed the coffee long enough but not too long.
If you’re finding your water is either pouring through the bottom too fast, or it’s too slow at pouring out … the size of your grind will need to be changed either finer, to slow it down or coarser to speed it up.
Once you’ve finished - throw away the filter and place the lid on the decanter to keep your coffee warm And there’s a delicious Hario V60 pour over to enjoy.
Touching back on the the other brew gear you could consider to make the best possible pour over here
A set of brewing scales with a timer / or use your phone - helps stick to a delicious recipe that is achievable time and time again.
A grinder will improve the quality of the brew by keeping those beans as fresh as possible before brewing. Ground coffee stales much quicker than the whole bean.
And lastly, The Kettle or pouring device which is important to ensure you have control over the flow of water into the V60.
With all that being said, you’ll still be able to make a coffee using the Hario V60 Starter Kit.
It really is simple to use, easy to clean and you create the brew that’s rights for you.
