Saint Nicholas Chapel – Crete | Greece [4K]

Agios Nikolaos (Greek: Άγιος Νικόλαος, "Saint Nicholas") is an islet with a chapel on the northern coast of Crete in the Aegean Sea. Administratively, it is located within the municipality of Georgioupoli, in Chania regional unit.
The small chapel is located on an islet, about 100 meters into the sea, connected to the beach by a stone path, sometimes covered by the sea. The chapel was built, dedicated to Saint Nicholas patron saint of sailors, to protect village fishermen and to provide a place for families to pray for their safe return.
Agios Nikolaos is one of the fairytale churches of Crete and a trademark of Georgioupolis. It is built on an artificial stone pier in the sea which is accessible from the beach.
This small chapel, which in combination with the open sea creates a unique picturesque landscape, has at times been an ideal cinematic setting for films that have been shot on the island.
