This series is all about finding the hidden gems of our Incredible India.

In this week’s episode, we are setting our location to Central India, to the 9th largest state in India — #Chhattisgarh. Surrounded by the tranquility of waterfalls, and the chimes of the temple bells, this rice bowl of India sits on a host of rich epics, traditions, literature, and cuisine. As one walks around a land dominated by thirty-six forts, the powerful gushing of the Chitrakote Falls—Niagara Falls of India—is akin to how powerfully the inhabitants clutch on to the archaic beliefs that works towards further alienating those that get plucked from their roots, and hauled by the formidable currents of intolerance, and ignorance. We are about to embark on a vanvas to a land that hosted Lord Ram, in order to better comprehend a tribe who are atypical to the waterfalls enveloping the State—dominating show of defiance carried out in a mesmerizing flow of beauty. From the State that gave us Kosa Silk, Pandavani, and Muthia, it also introduced us to a Hindu sect unlike any before. It’s time we familiarize ourselves with Chhattisgarh's Ramnami Samaj, in order to get better acquainted with how their skin has adopted the role of a canvas—a leitmotif—in this visually pleasing performance of dissent.

The Ramnami Samaj is a Hindu sect founded in the 1890s that worships Lord Ram. It’s members—shunned by the society, and not allowed to enter the temples owing to their low-caste status, found a way to oppose this problematic caste system. They tattoo the word "Ram" on their bodies and wear shawls with the word "Ram" printed on it. It’s a peaceful, yet mighty, act of rebellion against prejudice, and intolerance.
