Green Egg Island - Clearwater Bay, Sai Kung, Hong Kong - Snorkel & Freedive

I finally got around to exploring Green Egg Island which is nestled to the east of Clearwater Bay Country Park in Sai Kung. It’s not the easiest place to reach, most people seem to opt for kayaks rented in nearby Sheung Sze Wan Village, I opted to take my motorbike along to the end of Lung Ha Wan Road. From there, I did a spot of coasteering before jumping in the water and swimming the rest of the way (took around 45 mins). On reaching the sheltered side I’d Green Egg Island, the water is shallow, calm and clear and there was plenty of coral and interesting marine life to observe leisurely. I’d always wondered why I’d seen deaths reported so frequently at Green Egg, but upon swimming around the perimeter of the island (specifically the unsheltered side) it became clear. The sea becomes suddenly animated, a big swell that wants to suck you onto rocks covered with barnacles and sea urchins. The pull is strong and without fins, a snorkel and mask and confidence in the water it would be really challenging and I could see why people may, sadly, have lost their lives there. So if you go, be careful. The calm, sheltered side of the island lulls you into a false sense of security for what lies on the other side. I hiked back out, through a fairly dense jungle path and joined up with Lobster Bay Country Trail. All in all, a very picturesque spot, worth a visit.
