Neck strains and disc injuries are very common in the sport of jiu-jitsu, wrestling, and judo. The combination of choking, compression, and explosive movements, combined with the constant pounding of the neck and head make this a likely injury.
There are many types of neck injuries that happen with BJJ but the most common is a strained muscle, facet joint pinching (Compression), and disc injuries that can refer to pain down into the arm. It is very important to treat the injury as soon as possible so that you can get back to the sport and minimize the damage.
The constant wearing down of the neck also heavily contributes to the reversal in the cervical spine curve. In a normal spine, we have a lordosis or backward curve. As we continue to get strained and with poor posture, the neck loses its curve, and integrity, which helps to contribute to more problems and pain.
