2 Very SPECIAL DIETHELM MRL Lifts in Zürich, Switzerland

These lifts are located in an old commercial building in the city of Zürich. They are a replacement for a set of older, top drive 1:1 roped lifts and were installed in 2019/2020. The smaller lift does not serve the floors -2 and 1. The shaft only goes to floor -1 and there is no shaft opening on floor 1. The floors -1 and -2 are locked off by key switches.

The lifts of today were installed by the company Diethelm Aufzüge, based in Lachen SZ. Diethelm invented their own very special MRL concept: The motor is located on top of the counterweight. This saves space and makes the operation of the lifts very silent. The concept is available for lifts up to 1600 kg of capacity and a speed of 1.6m/s. The VF drive is located inside a small logic cabinet that is built into the counterweight. The controller, in this case a MPK411 by Kollmorgen, has it's own cabinet that can be placed anywhere near the lift. The controllers of these lifts are located in the sewage pump room, which is on the bottom floor underneath the shaft of the smaller lift.
Even though enabled on both lifts, advanced door opening does not seem to work on the smaller lift.

While many different concepts of counterweight driven lifts exist, Diethelm has gone for a conventional one where the motor drives the actual ropes that carry the lift car. Other options include tires that grip the tracks or an extra rope that is only used for movement and not for carrying any idle load.
