Great first day of the ELR Autumn Diesel Gala 2024, however not everything went as planned!

Another fantastic event at the East Lancashire Railway, featuring an awesome lineup of Diesel locomotives.

The day started impressively with 45108, D345, and 33109 all ready for departure. 45108 set off first, bound for Rawtenstall. Meanwhile, D7629 was detached from the rear of 33109, which continued to Heywood after suffering minor collision damage. However, D345 didn't depart as planned due to a vacuum brake failure and was taken off the train, and returned to the depot. As 45108 returned from Rawtenstall, 33109 arrived back from Heywood and was paired with D5054 Class 24 ‘Phil Southern’ for a double-headed departure to Rawtenstall. With no locomotive, we considered boarding 45108 to Rawtenstall, but then spotted 50015 in the distance, stepping in to replace the failed Class 40.

We then enjoyed a fantastic run behind 50015, making up for the disappointing start to the day. This was followed by more great haulage from 37109, 40012, 56006, and 26007.

The final run of the day was a triple header featuring 50015, 56006, and D345, bound for Heywood. With 50015 leading, it unfortunately lost power en route due to a fuel pump failure. This resulted in a lengthy delay at Heywood, where both 56006 and 50015 had to run around to bring the train back to Bury, with 56006 providing the tractive effort.

Overall, it was a fantastic, albeit tiring, day. A big thanks to all the staff and volunteers who make this such a wonderful event.
