How To Use A VHF Radio On A Boat - Boating Basics

The pair is aboard a new Four Winns H4 provided by Intermarine for this boating basics lesson. The how-to, 101-style tutorial video for boaters teaches boaters to understand the fundamentals of marine communications and learn how and when to properly make radio calls. Topics covered include the channels of a VHF marine radio including how boaters should use and monitor channel 16 (for ship-to-ship communications), channel 13 (for bridges and navigation), channel 9 (hailing channel) and channel 22 (coast guard) as well as the fundamentals of distress calls (mayday), urgent calls (pan pan) and basic safety communications (securité) and how and when to use each type of call.

Know The Important VHF Radio Channels:
Channel 16 - Primarily used for emergencies and ship-to-ship communications.
Channel 13 - Used for navigation and bridges.
Channel 09 - The general hailing channel, preferred by many recreational boaters (not monitored by the Coast Guard).
Channel 22 - Reserved for the Coast Guard (USCG)
