In this video I discuss Stargirl and the manic pixie dream girl trope as seen in the 2020 Disney movie starring Grace Vanderwaal and the book by Jerry Spinelli, how the original book’s success spawned dozens of Stargirl Societies across the United States, and how the film tries its best to subvert the manic pixie dream girl trope, but still falls flat.

Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, the twenty year old book that the film is based on and that made ‘Stargirl Societies’ a thing back in the early 00s, has been called ‘manic pixie dream girl for kids’ or ‘baby’s first manic pixie dream girl’, but I think there’s definitely more self awareness in the book that larger audiences might have missed, and that the more recent movie tries heavily to revamp for modern audiences.
