রথযাত্রা শুধু বাংলা ও ওড়িষ্যায় নয়, বাঙালি ও ওড়িয়াদের কাছে নয়, সমগ্র হিন্দু সমাজের কাছেই একটা বড়ো উৎসব। আষাঢ় মাসে রথের দিন থেকে যেন শুরু হয়ে যায় দুর্গাপুজোর দিন গোনা। আর দুর্গোৎসবের আগে উৎসবের আমেজটা ধরা দেয় রথ থেকে উল্টো রথ পর্যন্ত সাত দিন ব্যাপী রথের মেলায়। যে উৎসবের কেন্দ্রে আছেন জগন্নাথ দেব। আমাদের পশ্চিমবঙ্গ বাঙালিদের মধ্যে এমন মানুষ হয়তো খুঁজে পাওয়া যাবে না, যিনি জীবনে একাধিকবার পুরী জাননি। পুরীর জগন্নাথ দেবকে নিয়ে প্রচলিত রয়েছে নানা পৌরাণিক গল্প-কাহিনি। প্রচলিত মতে তিনি বিষ্ণু বা শ্রীকৃষ্ণের অবতার। কিন্তু ইতিহাস কী বলছে? ইতিহাসে জগন্নাথ দেবের উৎস কী? আজকের পর্বে রইল জগন্নাথ দেবের সেই অজানা ইতিহাস। কীভাবে আদিবাসী শবরদের বৃক্ষপূজা, তাদের নীলমাধব পুজো রূপ পেল আজকের জগন্নাথ বলরাম সুভদ্রার পুজোয়।
The Jagannath Rath Yatra is not just limited to Bengal and Odisha, nor is it just for Bengalis and Odias; it is a significant festival for the entire Hindu community. The countdown to Durga Puja seems to begin with the Jagannath Rath Yatra in the month of Ashadha. The festive spirit builds up from the day of the Rath Yatra and continues through the seven-day-long fair until the return Rath Yatra. At the center of this festival is Lord Jagannath. It would be rare to find a Bengali in West Bengal who hasn't visited Puri multiple times in their life. There are numerous mythological stories about Lord Jagannath of Puri, who is traditionally considered an avatar of Vishnu or Shri Krishna. But what does history tell us? What are the historical origins of Lord Jagannath?

Historical records and legends suggest that the origins of Jagannath worship can be traced back to the Savara tribe, an indigenous community of Odisha. The Savaras worshipped a wooden deity called Neela Madhaba, which is believed to have been transformed into Lord Jagannath. This connection highlights the deep tribal roots and the inclusive nature of Jagannath worship, making it a unique blend of tribal and classical Hindu traditions.
