Steam Train Descends Steep Hill At Cross Buck Level Railway Crossing, Cass Scenic Railroad, Cass WV

Coal powered steam train on steep mountain grade gives 2 Shave And A Haircuts! Steam trains in Cass, West Virginia. Awesome at grade railroad crossing with crossbuck protection on public road! This is Cass Scenic Railroad. They have Shay steam engines, passenger trains that you can ride, steep grades with 2 switchbacks, cabooses, model trains and all kinds of historic railroad items. This is the best steam train operation in the eastern United States beating East Broad Top Railroad by just a little bit, at least in my opinion. Cass has several different routes that you can ride and they have company houses that you can lease by the night. On this trip we stayed in a company house for 2 nights and we stayed another night in a motel right across from the train station. We have stayed in several different Cass company houses and they are all in excellent condition. The town of Cass and the railroad are owned by the state of West Virginia. Cass Railroad had an interchange with Chesapeake And Ohio Railroad in Cass although the original Cass Railroad was a logging railroad without ballast and had light pound sectional rail. The C&O abandoned their route here in the 1980s. We rode the Cass train to the top of the mountain to the overlook and we also rode the Durbin Rocket steam train in nearby Durbin, West Virginia. The slide show at the end of this video shows pictures of the Cass trains that I took. I have been here a couple of times when they had trains races between steam and diesel.
