My Epic Steam Adventure: Episode 5 - Cass Scenic Railroad to Bald Knob

The logging business was booming in the early 20th century in the heart of West Virginia's Allegheny Mountains. In order to reach the vast remote tracks of timber, lumber companies constructed intricate networks of railroads that traversed the landscape like webs from a spider.

After the timber played out, one of these operations was turned into a West Virginia State Park, as Cass Scenic Railroad. Today, you can ride over the same tracks that climb the steep mountain grades to access the remote timber that was harvested nearly a century ago.

As part 5 of my epic adventure, we take a ride to the top of Bald Knob. At 4800 feet, it's the 3rd highest peak in West Virginia, and the highest point east of the Mississippi River reached by Standard Gauge Railroad.
