Aix-en-Provence is the historic capital of Provence. It is a French municipality in the South-East of France, in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône, of which it is sub-prefecture, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. With 35 other municipalities, it forms the country of Aix within the Aix-Marseille Provence Metropolis.

The inhabitants of Aix are called the Aixois in French (in Provençal: lei sextians / lei sestian)2.

Founded in 122 BC under the name of Aquae Sextiae by the Roman consulCaius Sextius Calvinus, Aix later became the capital of the county of Provence.

The municipality has 147,478 inhabitants in 2021, making it the 23rd most populous in France. With Marseille, it constitutes an attraction area that had 1,888,788 inhabitants in 2023, which is the third attraction area of a city in France.

A thermal city since ancient times, Aix-en-Provence has an important cultural heritage (architecture, Granet museum, lyrical art festival, Grand Théâtre de Provence, etc.) and asserts itself as an important tourist center and as an essential cultural center around the Mediterranean in France. City of water, it is nicknamed the "City of Hundred Fountains" or even "Copenhagen of the Midi" by Marcel Pagnol4.
