VW Golf R Mk8 vs our Golf GTI Mk5 - ROUND 1 | PH Project Car Pt.2

What's the gulf between the Golfs? We pit our stock GTI against a Golf R 20 Years on track to see how much of an up-hill battle we face...

Well, we say stock, but we've made some slight modifications to prevent our GTI from blowing up the moment it heads out on a hot lap. Our first port of call is a visit to PH expert Pip Simcoe at BRS Automotive to give the GTI a once over and prove that we haven't bought a lemon... hopefully. Then it's on to Curborough Sprint Course, where we benchmark the GTI against the Golf R 20 Years. That's 333hp - 13hp more than the regular R - and all-wheel drive against our 200hp front-wheel drive lump. To make things even more difficult, Cam will be going up against Porsche Carrera Cup GB Pro-Am champion - Charles Rainford. Join us for 0-62mph (ish) runs, braking tests and a lap of Curborough as we find out how much work lays ahead of us. Hint: it's a lot.
