[English translation]

It seems as though there is someone in the winding valley of that mountain,
draped in fig ivy, with a sash of lichen,
eyes shining with emotion and smiling delightfully;
the gentleman admires her quiet grace.

She rides a crimson leopard, is followed by a cat of patterned coat,
and a magnolia wood carriage with banners of osmanthus.
Draped in orchid-of-the-mountain and water crowfoots,
she picks fragrant flowers as a gift for her admirer.

Deep within the bamboo forest, the sky can never be seen;
my journey was perilous, and I arrived alone and late.
Alone, I stand upon the mountain-top,
below me, the clouds are tempestuous and threaten rain.

In the distance there is only darkness; it is day but black as night.
A gentle breeze drifts from the east, and divine rain pours.
Someone much cherished has been left behind, and distressed, she forgets to return home.
The years pass, oh who can make me as beautiful as a flower in bloom again?

Picking longevity mushrooms in the mountain,
where there are many rocks and tendrilled vines,
resenting the young master who has forgotten to return.
Perhaps he thinks of me, but has no time?

That person in the mountains, as refined as birch-leaf pear,
drinks from rock springs, and is shaded by cypress and pine.
Ah…
Perhaps he thinks of me? But suddenly, there is doubt.

Thunder booms and rain drowns all sight,
the apes cry and the gold-black monkeys call out in the night.
Wind rustles leaves in the trees, and whispers through their branches;
I think of the young man who left me alone with my worry and woe.
