Landslides swept through the tea estates and villages in southern India's Kerala on Tuesday, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 93 lives, according to local media reports.

The calamity unfolded as heavy rains caused hillsides to collapse, triggering torrents of mud, water and tumbling boulders. The affected region – predominantly occupied by nearly 350 families and comprised of tea and cardamom estates – saw a swift response, as 250 individuals were successfully rescued by state officials in the wake of the disaster.

V. Venu, the Chief Secretary of Kerala, expressed concern, stating, "The situation continues to remain very grave. The last time we got a confirmation from the hospitals, we have about 70 plus dead bodies that have reached the hospitals... and so steps are being taken for the inquest and post-mortem, but we have news that there are more people missing and the casualty number may go up."

Tuesday's landslides mark the deadliest disaster in the state since 2018, when heavy floods claimed the lives of almost 400 people.
