Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Recoded his first song in Gramophone Records in 1936. "Sakhi he Ki Kom e Dukhore Kotha- সখী হে কি ক'ম এ দুখৰে কথা". The song is penned by Rasaraj Lakhminath Bezbaruah.
Umananda Gramophone Record Museum & Research Centre, an unique Assamese gramophone records collection of Umananda Dowerah, the founder-collector and archivist; established the museum and research centre with the blessing of Bharat-Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on 2003. The door is opened for public on 2008 by Manisha Hazarika, the veteran artist.
In this museum almost about 5000 Assamese songs gramophone records preserved and also the dramas of that periods recorded in gramophone records. It includes: The first Assamese song Gramophone Record published in 1924 by Prafulla Chandra Baruah, voice of Jyotiprasad Agarwala, Bishnu Prasad Rabha, Mitradev Mahanta, Anandiram Das, Priyabala Rabha, Prafullabala Barooah, Girija Baruah, Gunabala Gogoi, Master Bhupen Hazarika, Kamalananda Bhattacharya, Ravan Nath, Anukul Nath, Charu Bordoloi, Gunada Das, Sivaprasad Bhattacharya, Girijabala Bordoloi, Swargajyoti Baruah, Sadhana Baruah, Mamata Baruah, Mukul Baruah, Prabudh Chandra Baruah, Punya Konwar, Gangadhar Borthakur, Kanak Das, Labanyaprabha Devi, Prof Boloram Das, Dhiren Das, Kalpanath Phukan, Nirmal Mazumdar, Tarikuddin Ahmed etc.
There are also a vast collection of Assamese Dramas (Palla) recorded on those decades (1936-1950) by various artists and drama groups. Joymoti, Sonit Kuwari, Jerngar Sati,, Monumoti, Lachit, Beula, Bordoishila, Ajogar Saap, Soumaror Firingoti, Mali-Malini, MLA, Bihuwati, Jayjatra, Maniram Dewan, Piali Phukan, Ratani, Srimanta Sankardev and many more which are penned by Jyotiprasad Agarwala, Bishnu Prasad Rabha, Phani Sarma, Ganesh Gogoi, Brajanath Sarma, Prabin Phukan, Nagaon Natya Samiti, Lakhyadhar Choudhury, Kamal Choudhury etc.
Sangeet Visharad and Sangeet Nandan Umananda Dowerah, collected these legends pieces of Assamese culture under a ten years mission from 1993-2003 from different parts of state of Assam. Apart from this Mr. Dowerah is one of the visiting fellow of Dibrugarh University, A nominated member of Dept. of Culture, Govt. of Assam for approval of State Anthem "O Mur Apunar Desh" and also music faculty of Swami Bivekananda Kendriya Vidyalay, Moran
