George Călinescu spunea despre biserica din Densuș, că este "o biserică bizară, făcută din marmuri și coloane, culese de la Sarmizegetusa. Un mic stâlp din cei patru care susțin îngusta turlă, e o stelă romană purtând numele lui Longinus. E o marmură cu o inscripție elegantă, luminoasă, frumoasă, precum o statuie. Ascunsă în umbra, abia luminată de câteva șuvițe de soare venind pe niște ferestruici, aceasta face impresia unei opere divine, furată de genii nocturne".
Dintotdeauna acestă biserică m-a atras și m-a intrigat deopotrivă. Istoria și legendele despre acest loc au o aură de mister, și se pierd în trecut.
Prima mărturie scrisă despre biserică, datează din anul 1360, dar istoricii consideră că aceasta este cu mult mai veche, si că a fost ridicată fie pe un templu al lui Zamolxe, peste care s-a ridicat mormântul generalului Longinus, mort în luptele cu dacii, sau că în secolul al II-lea aici a fost un templu păgân închinat zeului Marte. În credința populară, lăcașul inițial a fost ridicat de uriași.
De ce sfinții pictati pe pereti au ochii scosi?
Reforma calvină inițiată în secolul al XVI-lea s-a fi manifestat violent asupra bisericilor medievale românești, și prin distrugerea icoanelor, și vandalizarea chipurilor sfinților.
Unele biserici medievale erau folosite în comun de preoți ortodocși sau uniți și calvini, între care adesea apăreau conflicte. Icoanele erau unul dintre motive. În timpul slujbelor ținute de preoții reformați erau întoarse cu fața la perete, iar când aveau loc liturghiile ținute de preoții ortodocși erau așezate la loc.
Pereții bisericii, unde la un moment dat țineau slujbe calvinii, au fost zugrăviți, pentru a ascunde picturile bizantine care împodobeau pereții. Cu timpul, stratul de var a fost înlăturat, iar icoanele fost puse din nou în valoare.

This church has always attracted and intrigued me at the same time. The history and legends about this place have an aura of mystery, and are lost in the past.
The first written testimony about the church dates from 1360, but historians believe that it is much older, and that it was built either on a temple of Zamolxe, over which the tomb of the general Longinus, who died in the battles with the Dacians, was erected, or that in the 2nd century there was a pagan temple dedicated to the god Mars here. In popular belief, the original abode was built by giants.
Why do the saints painted on the walls have their eyes out?
The Calvinist reform initiated in the 16th century manifested itself violently on the Romanian medieval churches, also by destroying icons and vandalizing the faces of saints.
Some medieval churches were jointly used by Orthodox or Unitarian and Calvinist priests, between whom conflicts often arose. Icons were one of the reasons. During the services held by the reformed priests, they were turned to face the wall, and when liturgies held by the Orthodox priests were held, they were seated in their place.
The walls of the church, where Calvinists once held services, were painted to hide the Byzantine paintings that adorned the walls. Over time, the layer of lime was removed, and the icons were once again valued.
