The Giants House in Akaroa/Banks Peninsula, New Zealand

Akaroa and the Banks Peninsula is only a short approximately 1.5 hour drive away from Christchurch. Akaroa is known as the most French town in New Zealand given that the beautiful, charming, harbour-side town was the only French settlement in NZ.

Banks Peninsula was originally an island formed by two volcanic cones. It has two dominant craters which form Lyttelton and Akaroa Harbours.

On the way to Akaroa we stopped off at Montgomery Park Scenic Reserve along Summit Road to check out a massive totara tree, believed to be about 2,000 years old, as well as a scenic viewpoint over Akaroa Harbour.

The Giants House, Akaroa is only about a 20 mins drive away from the ancient totara. The entire landscape is brimming with flowers throughout the manicured gardens and it's filled with fantastical mosaic sculptures too. This quirky, colourful and delightful place is the creation of artist and horticulturalist, Josie Martin.

For lunch we ate at the beachside restaurant, Harbar. Friendly staff, great food and an unobstructed view of Akaroa Harbour, we were totally on holiday mood.
