The Chinese government recently shut down the renowned education center, Gangjong Sherig Norbu Lobling School in Golog, citing what authorities term as ‘non-compliance with the Chinese government’s education policies.’ However, this move is seen by Tibet rights groups as part of China’s ongoing Sinicization drive, targeting privately run establishments that preserve Tibetan language, culture, and identity. We sat down with Shede Dawa, former student of the School and Dr Gyal Lo, expert on China’s forced assimilation of Tibetan children to learn about the causes and implications of the closure of this important educational institute.
