The festival of Mahashivaratri is a time like no other - staying up the entire night and visiting a temple, feelling a sense of absolute peace in the night time, listening to and participating in the chanting of various stotras and music in the name of Lord Shiva and much more.
There are numerous verses and songs on Shiva, written by saints for many centuries and they have become an integral part of Carnatic Music. Sharing with you a verse and a kriti I deeply connect with, recorded at a recent concert for Hamsadhwani in Chennai.
The verse is composed by saint Manikkavasagar and starts 'Maari ninru ennai mayakkidum' on the Chidambaram Kshetram, and the song composed by Sri Papanasam Sivan in the raga Abheri / Bhimpalas.

Accompanying me in this concert were the wonderful musicians B Ananthakrishnan on the violin and Akshay Anantapadmanabhan on the mridangam.
