Creating a Pierced Wheel Thrown Vase - Carved Holes for Candle or Lights

In this video, I throw a vase from two hunks of clay which I put together to center... probably totaling around 8 pounds. A handy technique if you ever struggle with larger pieces of clay while centering. I show the process of centering and throwing the vase, as well as cleaning the bottom when leatherhard. I then pierce the vase, using drill bits and an exacto knife to cut my desired pattern. When it stiffened a bit more, I had to go back in and clean the cut pattern. (CLEANING took a lot of time) I allowed it to dry very slowly, then I fired it. Once bisque fired, I show how to rinse and dip in glaze... then once more... clean out the holes to prevent the glaze from clogging them. Lastly, I show the fired glazed form. I have twinkle lights displayed in my piece- but you could certainly use a candle if you want. Here is a link to the lights I have displayed in them. They work really well- and I use rechargeable AA batteries in them.

In the video, I am using Standard 259 claybody fired to cone 04 bisque. I glazed it in Coyote Peacock glaze, and glaze fired to cone 5 with a 25 minute hold.
