Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for Lancia with the unveiling of the New Lancia Ypsilon. This car, the New LANCIA YPSILON EDIZIONE LIMITATA CASSINA, is the first of its kind, an electric vehicle that will be sold in Italy as a limited edition of 1906 numbered and certified pieces. This model stands out for its exceptional design, comfort, and a feeling of well-being inside the car. The interior is designed to feel like a cozy Italian home, with a consistent blue color theme covering the seats, which feature a "Cannelloni" design, as well as the dashboard and door panel inserts. A new feature in this car is the Cassina multifunctional "tavolino," a table that can also charge smartphones, introduced for the first time in an automobile.
While Lancia claims the design of the headlights and taillights is inspired by their iconic rally car, this comparison might be a bit generous. The round shape of the rear lights is somewhat reminiscent of the Stratos, a feature not unique to Lancia cars. The Stellantis brand has incorporated a "Y" shape into the lighting at both the front and rear of the car, and there are separate daytime running lights that follow the same design. For an added touch of style, the car has glossy black finishes on the wheel arches, side mirrors, and the rear pillar.
The car's interior represents a significant change from its French counterpart, especially notable as we are now in 2024, with a standard dual-screen setup. Fortunately, there are still physical buttons available that allow for easy access to some of the climate controls. The dual screens are each 10.25 inches, and the car is equipped with a wireless charging pad, three USB-C ports, and allows for smartphone connections through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This modern city car also features a unique sound system, ambient lighting, and a special air conditioning filter that eliminates 99 percent of harmful particles.
The 2024 electric Lancia Ypsilon is powered by a front-mounted motor that delivers 154 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque, comparable to the Peugeot e-208. It's equipped with a 51-kWh battery pack that can last for up to 250 miles (403 kilometers) on a single charge according to the WLTP combined cycle. This electric motor and battery setup is also used in another Stellantis vehicle, the Opel e-Corsa.
Unlike its predecessor, which was only sold in Italy, the new Ypsilon will be available through more than 70 dealerships across Europe. The launch will begin in Belgium and The Netherlands in the middle of this year, followed by France and Spain, and finally Germany in 2025. Lancia aims to appeal to a younger demographic, specifically those aged 40-45, with this premium hatchback, which will be the last model to feature combustion engines.
Lancia's revitalization will continue into 2026 with the reintroduction of the "Gamma" model as a flagship car. This vehicle will be a fastback built on the Stellantis STLA Medium platform, measuring nearly 4.7 meters (about 185 inches) in length. In 2028, the "Delta" model will make a comeback as a compact hatchback.
Moving forward, Lancia has committed to selling only electric vehicles from 2028 onwards. This means the upcoming Ypsilon model, which will feature a mild-hybrid gasoline engine, will only be available for a limited time.
