Pro Boat Stealthwake Brushless Upgrade a success!!!! UPDATED

UPDATED with rough water running clips and correction on prop sizes!

We finally found the right upgrades for the Pro Boat Stealthwake with the Turnigy Marine 90 amp ESC and the Surpass Hobby 3660 2600KV brushless motor. Except for the ESC and motor upgrade, everything else is stock on the boat. We wanted to get rid of the heat issues with the brushed motor and maybe get a little more speed out of the boat without spending a lot of money or compromising the sea-worthiness of the boat. We got there for under $100 (US)!

We tested out some different propellers to see what would work the best. We only use a 2-cell LiPo battery in the Stealthwake, even though the new ESC can handle up to a 6S. The stock prop is a 40mm dia., 1.6 pitch. The first prop we tested was an Octura 1630. It barely got the boat moving. So we went up to a 35mm dia., 1.4 pitch prop and the boat ran great. It hit 22mph with the GPS speedometer. Since it ran so well with the 35mm prop, we put the stock 40mm, 1.6 pitch prop back on. The handling was just as good, hit 25mph and everything stayed at a reasonable temperature after a full battery (15 minutes!). Considering the stock brushed 550 motor ran between 16 and 20mph, the bump in speed was nice.

When we charged the transmitter battery and headed back to the lake a week later, it was really windy and the water was rough. The Stealthwake handled well, but not as nice as it did on the calmer water. I wish the trim tabs were adjustable so we could get the bow down to handle the waves better. Another future potential upgrade but still a lot of fun to drive as-is!
