Musth is completely a natural phenomenon seen in healthy adult bull elephants. During this stage there is a rise in reproductive hormones in elephant’s body which makes them restless, aggressive, or even unpredictable. Musth typically lasts between 2-3 months and occurs in three stages – a 3-4 week pre-musth condition, a 4-5 week peak musth, and a 4-5 week post-musth condition.

In this video, Puthuppally Keshavan is in a “Pre-musth” state and is prepared to go through the musth period and this video also shows how he would be taken care with food, water, mahout's attention during this whole period.
