During the lockdowns I discovered the work of Thomas Moore. In his book Dark Nights of the Soul, Moore talks about the dark night of the soul. Something that I am sure many of us have experienced. This refers to something that challenges our life in a such a profound way; this may be a major illness, a death in the family or loss of a job. How do we find the strength to deal with such a situation. Do we learn to grown from the dark night of the soul, or do we become angry, bitter, and withdrawn from the world? In other words, do we descend down the pathway of mediocrity.
What does Moore mean by mediocrity?
It is the failure to let the inner brilliance shine. … When the inner genius shows itself in personality, way of life, values, and expression, mediocrity disappears.
It is the cloud that prevents the spark from being seen.
Mediocrity is the attitude of ‘do only what is necessary and sufficient,’ the feeling of not having an essence worth showing.
It involves giving up on the possibility of living an outstanding life.
Moore reminds us that the dark night of the soul is not a psychological syndrome but a quest for meaning during life’s darkest hours. It is an opportunity to restore oneself. Moore suggests it should be an opportunity to reflect and delve into our soul’s deepest needs, so one can find a new understanding of life’s meaning. He states we can use the dark night of the soul to transcend mediocrity and to encounter the numinous.
After reading Moore’s book, I realized that essential oils allow us to deal with the dark night of the soul, and to experience the numinous.
I love this word – it refers to a feeling of awe that we can experience and how we feel connected with nature and the rest of humankind. The numinous also reconnects us with our passion and purpose for life. The numinous is the heart of a spiritual experience and involved in the experience of falling in love. When Fischer Rizzi spoke of essential oils opening the door to the soul and spoke of falling in love, she was experiencing essential oil’s numinous qualities.
I love the way, Moore states that it should be our role as health care providers to nourish the numinous, rather than focusing on the traditional therapeutic approach which aims at the removal of symptoms as a goal.

In the spirit of Thomas Moore’s profound words, it is my deepest hope that the Aromatree Academy becomes the platform where we can also explore the numinous qualities of essential oils which in turn allow us to flourish and lead to a deeper understanding of the healing power of nature.
