Waterfalls And Gunpowder! - SPECTACULAR Waterfall Country, The Brecon Beacons Bannau Brycheiniog

On the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons in South Wales, you’ll find Waterfall Country.
This walk takes me to the ruins of Glyn Neath Gunpowder Works near Pontneddfechan.

You can find the ruins of the Glyn Neath powder works spread alongside the wooded valley of the Afon Mellte.

Like my trip to the Black Mountain Quarry to the west of the Brecon Beacons, it is a reminder of the heavy industrial past of this area of South Wales.

From 2023 the Brecon Beacons are now called Bannau Brycheiniog

There are many walks from Pontneddfechan but you need to get there early to guarantee parking.

I continued my walk to Sgwd Gwladus (also known as Sgwd Gwladys and Lady Falls). The Lady in question was a 5th-century princess and legend said she jumped into the water as she couldn’t marry her lover.

After Sgwd Gwladus I continue to follow the path to the upper waterfall Sgwd Einion Gam (Falls of the crooked anvil). This is also part of the old Welsh legend.

The path is very narrow in parts and not recommended as if you slip there’s a 20-foot drop to the rocks below. Instead, take the safer route along the river itself, you may have to get your feet wet.

If you do make the walk you will not be disappointed, the waterfall is incredible.
