The Alzheimer’s Association of Southeast Texas is preparing to bring the community together for its 14th annual Family Portrait Luncheon, an event focused on education, support and honoring loved ones affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

The luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, March 26, and will feature a speaker, a silent auction and lunch. This year’s speaker will be the CEO of the organization’s chapter in Houston, who is expected to provide a research update.

Organizers said the event will also highlight the importance of early diagnosis. Shannon Briggs said there are “two new treatments that are out” and that people “need to get diagnosed early rather than later because it only helps those with early onset.” She also said the luncheon will include information on lifestyle changes that can support brain health.

Beyond the annual luncheon, the Alzheimer’s Association of Southeast Texas offers ongoing resources in the region, including a caregiver support group that meets the third Thursday of the month at the R.C. Miller Library. Briggs said the group is a place for caregivers to share what is happening in their lives and learn from one another. The organization also offers free educational programs for businesses, civic organizations and churches about Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

As part of this year’s luncheon, attendees will receive a medical journal at their place setting to take home. Organizers said the book can be used to record medications, doctor visits and family history in one place.

Tickets are still available, along with tables and donation options. Organizers directed those interested to register at FamilyPortrait.giftsmart.com.

The luncheon is called the Family Portrait Luncheon in part because it was started 14 years ago by a group of women who wanted to honor loved ones. Organizers said there will be a table in the lobby with picture frames of family members who have died.

The event will be held at the MCM Eleganté, with an 11 a.m. start time. Organizers said Hester Bell is the honorary chair this year.

The luncheon also serves as a lead-in to the area’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Organizers encouraged people to mark their calendars for Oct. 3.
