Debabrata Biswas, fondly known as “George Da” is a well known legend in the world of Rabindra Sangeet or Tagore Songs. Debabrata Biswas’ early recordings of Tagore Songs are an excellent presentation of these Bengali Songs which followed the strict orthodox rule bound notation bound route that was set by the so called “authorities”. In the early 1940s recordings of Debabrata Biswas’ Rabindra Sangeet will showcase the deep throated modulations and excellent dramatics that he was known for. Though Debabrata Biswas was a registered artist under the All India Radio he held his job in the Life Insurance Company Of India. He was heavily motivated and associated with the left politics in Bengal. Debabrata Biswas wrote in his biography “Bratyo Joner Ruddha Sangeet” how he was heartbroken when the communist party of India went for a division.

Debabrata Biswas is also probably one of the most controversial Rabindra Sangeet artist of his era. The conflict with the “authorities” started from 1964 onwards with the liberties he started taking by challenging the published tune-notations, scansion, traditional tempo, beat and rhythms which people were accustomed to associate with Tagore songs. Debabrata Biswas was a true musician and composer himself and was greatly influenced by the western music styles as well as various world music styles. Incidentally so was Tagore himself as we can see in various compositions of Rabindra Sangeet. Debabrata Biswas convinced that Rabindra Sangeet should break the shackles of conformity and should be allowed to emerge as free art form and that way it will remain popular for generations. Debabrata Biswas was a visionary ahead of his time as we can see that his thoughts are precisely what have happened to Rabindra Sangeet in modern times. He was a pioneer when it came to popularizing Rabindra Sangeet.This compilation “Debabrata Biswas Vol-2” has some of the most popular Tagore songs sung by Debabrata Biswas such as Keno Chheye Aachho, Baro Aasha Korey, Aakash Bhara, Tora Je Ja Bolish etc.
