Neosuchia: Ancestors of Modern Crocodilians

Описание к видео Neosuchia: Ancestors of Modern Crocodilians

Neosuchians first diverged from their Notosuchian cousins during the Early Jurassic and tended to be semi-aquatic in nature. Some basal forms such as the Atoposaurids were diminutive terrestrial carnivores that were most common in Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous Europe. Most of the more derived Neosuchians were generally similar to modern crocodilians in appearance, being semi-aquatic predators. The Goniopholids inhabited very similar niches to crocodiles and alligators before the latter two groups evolved, declining in diversity during the Late Cretaceous. Some Neosuchians were also tiny in comparison to their modern relatives, such as Bernissartia and Susisuchus. The derived clade Eusuchia emerged during the Early Cretaceous and diversified rapidly during the second half of the period.
