My Dad has had the chance to work twice in the Canadian Arctic... and he brought me back stories from the Inuit people who live there. How did the empty, frozen ocean suddenly become home to walruses, seals, whales... all the wildly different creatures of the Northern deep? It all came from the courage of an Inuit girl named Sedna; when her father cruelly tossed her overboard, she sank down into the dark waters. But Sedna had such a great heart -- such a vividly creative spirit -- that she sacrificed her fingers and turned each one into a new animal. It is said, even today, that Sedna lives happily in the sea with her creations -- no longer alone and no longer powerless.
