WWF Royal Rumble 1996 – The “Reliving The War” PPV Review

The 9th Royal Rumble pay per view took place on January 21st 1996 in Fresno, California. The event was headlined with a WWF title match pitting champion Bret Hart vs The Undertaker. The winner of the Royal Rumble would likely face ‘Taker or Bret at WrestleMania XII, and this particular Royal Rumble may have felt a little predictable to some after Shawn Michaels received a huge push in the run-up to the event.

Shawn Michaels wanted to live out his dream and become WWF champion in 1996. In order to do that, he would have to overcome 29 other guys inside the annual Royal Rumble match. HBK was (in storyline) knocked out by an Owen Hart enziguri and fans rallied behind Shawn in the run-up to the rumble match. In order to win the rumble, HBK will have to step into the ring with guys like The Ringmaster, Diesel, Hunter Hearst Helmsley, Yokozuna, the 1-2-3 Kid and The British Bulldog. This Royal Rumble also features the WWF debut of Vader.

Elsewhere on the show Razor Ramon defends his Intercontinental Championship against Goldust, The Smoking Gunns take on The Bodydonnas, and Ahmed Johnson wrestles Jeff Jarrett in the PPV opener.
