"to cut a pigeon wing": The Dictionary of American Regional English. To execute intricate dance steps gracefully...to dance in a fancy way

Under the direction of 2020 Guggenheim Fellow Gabrielle Lamb, Pigeonwing Dance performs choreography that provokes curiosity in lovers of both crossword puzzles and cat videos. Improvisatory abandon is counterbalanced by meticulous calculation, revealing intricate architectures where fleeting moments of resolution open into new wonderings. Described by The New Yorker as “eccentric...playful...curious”, PWD has been presented by, among others, Bryant Park, the 92Y Harkness Dance Festival, and Symphony Space, where they became the first dance company commissioned by Selected Shorts.

About The Carpet Series

The Carpet Series was born during the first weeks of lockdown, when I began making a series of Quarantine Dances on a 5 x 8 Persian carpet in my front room. When I was contacted by Works & Process at the Guggenheim for a Virtual Commission, I took the carpet outdoors and filmed myself dancing in my Hamilton Heights neighborhood. Noticing that outdoor carpet dancing attracts a lot of attention, I created a live show and took it to the sidewalks and parks of NYC. The Carpet Series, for five highly trained contemporary ballet dancers, is a physically-distanced performance rich in detail, complexity and virtuosity. It premiered in July and is currently touring the boroughs, inviting screen-weary New Yorkers of all ages to pause and experience the beauty of live dance.
