This video defines a leaf and describes the characteristics of a Phyllopodium.
It also describes the parts of a typical leaf :
Leaf base also called as Hypopodium is the part by which the leaf remain attached to the stem. It assumes different shapes in different plants. In legumes, the leaf base is swollen and is called as Pulvinus. Nyctinasty is due to changes in the turgor Pressure in the cells of Pulvinus. In monocots, leaf base expands into sheath.
In some leaves stipules are present and such leaves are called stipulate leaves.
Leaves in which stipules are absent are called ex-stipulate leaves.
Stipules may get modified to perform additional functions.
Petiole is also called Mesopodium and it connects the leaf lamina with leaf base.
Leaf with petiole is petiolate leaf while the leaf in which petiole is absent is called sessile leaf.
Petiole may also get modified to perform some additional Functions.
Leaf Lamina is also called as Epipodium or leaf blade. On the basis of distinguishable leaf surfaces, leaves are of 2 types: Bifacial leaves and Unifacial leaves. Thus leaves may be called as Dorsiventral leaves or Isobilateral leaves or Centric leaves.
Leaf lamina have veins and veinlets.
